Alternatives to coffee: Matcha Tea

Coffee, you hate it, you love it or can live without it (i think you need help?) Whatever the case may be, the good thing is, it’s not all we have to talk about nowadays when we talk about caffeine. Coffee is not the only substance that can provide caffeine, and moreover, it’s not even the best substance to provide you not only with a high level of caffeine but a high level that has a stable and sustained level it either-might I be saying there might be something out there that is actually better than coffee? Yes. Yes I am 😌.

As the new trend of matcha green tea breaks our instagram feed, more and more people are drinking other alternatives to coffee.  Some people drink alternative coffee because they are health-conscious, others are trying to replace what used to be a bad addiction to coffee, while others are really just following trends; which one are you?

Speaking of trends, I’ll start by introducing Matcha tea. You’ve probably heard of it or have seen millions of reels and TikToks showcasing this  antioxidant-rich aesthetically pleasing drink. To go into more detail, Matcha tea is kind of like green tea, in fact it is a king of green tea but the difference between ~Matcha and green tea is that Matcha tea uses up the whole leaf that is dried then grounded into a fine powder, meaning it is a richer source of vitamins and antioxidants as well as caffeine compared to green tea.

Green tea, on the other hand, does not use the whole leaf and as such doesn’t have as much of a concentration of antioxidants as Matcha tea has. But what about coffee? Well, Matcha seems to be doing well on that front too, Matcha tea also trumps Coffee regarding its health benefits, nutritional value and sometimes the caffeine level–yes, caffeine too (sometimes). This is because the caffeine ranges and this inconsistent variation can sometimes be higher than coffee.

What is for certain though is that while caffeine found in coffee may have a stimulating effect on one's nervous system, the caffeine found in Matcha tea contains a high content of L-theanine which helps to reduce the anxiety-inducing effects of caffeine and yet still stay energised and focused, without which you would probably get the jitters too ☕.
